In term 1, we were taught about the periodic table and atomic structure and we expected to describe the periodic table as an arrangement and so on. I find that the periodic table is easy to understand and memorize because of the rhymes at the back of the word and most of the elements rhyme. I feel that learning the elements are important as it is the first step in chemistry and we would need to understand basic types of elements like noble gases and so on and how it works. I learnt that there were 2 basic categories of the elements, non-metal and metal, which was fairly simple. For atomic structure, we were expected to state the charges and protons, neutrons and electron. The atomic structure is simple to understand too, but sometimes it might be a bit confusing as different atomic structures have different placing for the labels. We also learnt about chemical bonding and equation writing. For chemical bonding, it was kind of tough but by using the "dot and cross" diagrams we can form formation of ionic bonds between metals and non-metals. Also, we learnt that in order not to react with other element, one element has to be stable with a perfect number of electrons, (2, 8, 8, etc.). And for equation writing, we need not memorize the equation but we need to know how some words change when writing some equations. I also learnt about acids, bases and salts, in which how they react with one another to form a stronger acid etc. It is related to atomic structures, because for them to react to each other we must have an atomic structure to know how they are related and how to form a reaction between the acid and salt and neutralization and concentration etc. We also need to know about weak acid and strong acids, their difference. That is generally what I learnt in term 1 and my reflections would be in the next blog post.
Thank you.
